Five Reasons To Join A Community Orchestra or Choir - Even If You're A Beginner

Ever wanted to join a community orchestra or choir, but felt like you weren’t “good enough”? You’re not alone.
At Stand Sure Orchestra & Choirs here in Hatherleigh, we hear that a lot — and our answer is always the same: you don’t need to be perfect. You just need to love music.
Here are five brilliant reasons to join a community music group — especially if you’re new or haven’t played or sung in years.

1. You Don’t Need to Be a Pro To Join A Community Orchestra (Honestly!)
A lot of people think community orchestras and choirs are only for trained musicians. Not true!
Most groups (including ours) don’t hold auditions. If you’ve got enthusiasm, a decent sense of pitch or rhythm, and the willingness to learn, you’re in. For instrumentalists, we recommend around Grade 5+ as a guide — but that’s not a requirement.
2. You’ll Make Real-Life Friends, Not Just Facebook Ones
Music brings people together — and a community group is a great place to meet friendly, like-minded souls.
Whether you’re new to the area, recently retired, looking for a creative outlet, or just want to reconnect with something joyful, choir and orchestra rehearsals offer weekly connection with actual humans. With biscuits.
3. It’s a Confidence Booster (Even If You’re a Bit Nervous)
We get it — joining a new group can be daunting. But community music is all about progress, not perfection. You’ll be amazed at how quickly your confidence grows, especially with encouragement from the people around you.
And let’s be honest — we’ve all hit a wrong note. It’s part of the fun.
4. You’ll Learn (or Re-Learn) Faster Than You Think
Whether you haven’t touched your violin since school or you’ve only ever sung in the shower, you’ll be surprised how quickly it comes back. Our rehearsals include learning tracks, shared scores, and lots of friendly guidance.
And if you’ve always wanted to improve your sight-reading, timing, or blending with others — this is the perfect way to build those skills.
5. Performing Together Feels Amazing
There’s nothing quite like the buzz of performing in front of a live audience — especially when it’s alongside a full choir and orchestra.
At Stand Sure, our concerts range from film music and show tunes to rock anthems and festive favourites. They’re energetic, emotional, and always unforgettable.
